Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

Along with Jennifer Hudson, Kirstie Alley, Jordin Sparks, Rosie O’Donnell, Raven-Simone, Drew Carey, Star Jones, Randy Jackson and more, three notable celebrities have recently won their on-going battles with their weight. Carrie Fisher has lost an impressive 50+ pounds, John Goodman is a healthy shadow of himself with his 100-pound weight loss, and Christina Aguilera has finally shed her baby fat. You don’t have to win an Oscar or Emmy to be successful; sometimes the greatest success comes with winning your own private battles and turning your obstacles into opportunities in order to achieve your goal. Here are the stories of three celebrities who’ve turned their weight loss obstacles into opportunities.

Carrie Fisher  

“A long time ago in a galaxy far far away”… We all remember Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, the svelte beauty in Star Wars. Her phenomenal movie success almost 40 years ago thrust Fisher into the limelight, and the rest was history. Now a middle-aged woman, she was a spokesperson for Jenny Craig when she first lost the 50 pounds that crept up on her. She did gain some weight back, but now the tiny 5’1” actress has shed the weight “for good” to prepare for the for the new Star Wars movie. She has a personal trainer and is on a strict diet. Above all, she has won her battle with cocaine, which first started when she was making the original movie. Her semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards From the Edge, chronicled her story and struggle for sobriety. Fisher notes she is delighted to have this opportunity to reinvent herself in preparation for the much-anticipated movie.

John Goodman

To those of us who are a certain age, John Goodman will always be the chubby, sweet husband of Roseanne Barr in the television program. While overweight, he did manage to still look healthy, but lately he discussed his weight issues during that time. “I’d get off of ‘Roseanne’ every spring. I’d lose 60 lbs every spring. Then I got too fond of the barley corn… I’d gain it back and then some, every year.” It was a constant cycle of loss and gain. Now that he’s exercising regularly and eating properly, he is finally off that roller coaster and on the track to good health with his 100 pound weight loss. He said in a recent interview that he feels great, but realizes that, “It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”

Christina Aguilera 

When pop-star Christina Aguilera had a baby the inevitable happened: she gained weight. The problem was, the weight didn’t drop off and soon she was carry an extra 49 pounds. Aguilera learned that she had to exercise and eat properly. She made the decision to stop eating fatty foods and unhealthy favorites (she previously frequented Nate ‘n Al’s – her favorite food joint). Now she limits her alcohol intake and eats combinations of healthy fats, protein and vegetables. Snacks like celery and almond butter or shrimp cocktail are her go-tos. No more creamy dressings or heavy breaded foods for her, but she does like a glass of wine with her chicken or fish for dinner. Aguilera’s health and happiness shines through and the proud mom looks better than ever. She has vowed to never gain weight again.
