Book Review: ’10 Lessons from a Former Fat Girl: Living with Less of You and More of Life’

In 2008, Amy Parham and her husband, Phillip Parham, competed as a team on NBC’s hit reality series, The Biggest Loser. When the show premiered, Amy weighed 229 pounds in the first episode. In the following weeks, she was able to shed 47 pounds before being eliminated.

During the season finale, Parham’s weight loss totaled a loss over 105 pounds. Following her success on The Biggest Loser, Amy went on to publish 10 Lessons from a Former Fat Girl: Living with Less of You and More of Life in 2011.

Parham jokes about literally growing up in the back of a Dairy Queen since her mom owned a franchise. This book will help those who might be addicted to food, and addresses the mental, physical and emotional issues that are tied to being overweight.” She says, “It’s about learning how to transform the fat girl (a woman who has poor eating and exercise habits, a food addiction, a lack of self-esteem, and a distorted image of herself, God, and others) into a fit girl (a woman who practices healthy eating and exercise habits, takes care of herself emotionally, physically, and mentally, and believes in herself and God).”

Sure, there are tons of books out there that promise to help you lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time. However, the Center for Disease Control asserts, “Healthy weight loss isn’t just about a ‘diet’ or ‘program’. It’s about an ongoing lifestyle that includes long-term changes in daily eating and exercise habits.” Parham’s book can assist those dedicated to creating a healthy lifestyle for themselves. Many weight loss books are about the number a person sees when they step onto the scale. 10 Lessons from a Former Fat Girl focuses on improving a person’s entire physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

If you’re considering a drastic change to your lifestyle, flip through 10 Lessons from a Former Fat Girl. Due to heavy Christian overtones, this book isn’t for everybody.
